Explorations for the design of III. It was a dream come true to help answer a mysterious question: what does a member of the IX look like?
As a team, we explored many paths and I remember Dorje Bellbrook pitching the idea that III could echo the alienness of the creatures in Earth's oceans. This lit a fuse for me. I pursued the idea that III should be a kind of Lovecraftian Cosmic Sea Star 🌟 Something that felt primordial, yet familiar. I had a blast exploring this body plan's movements, behavior, and cosmic-space-time-twists, ala wormhole eye, and of course, its death.
In game, III is revealed to be murdered and part of our task was to describe how the audience could feel grief for an incomprehensible being. I remembered one day discovering a jellyfish dried out in sand and how I felt to see something beautifully alien lifeless and somewhere it wasn't supposed to be. This was my guiding memory and I give endless applause to how the team handled this feeling in the ending cinematic and skybox!
Huge shoutout to the teams on Narrative, Concept and Art Direction for bringing III to life.
